The System is Broken. Build Your Own Pipeline.

By William "Jax" Jackson

Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Carlos Ruiz just told Congress what I've been saying for years.

The transition system is broken.

Last week, during a congressional hearing on service member quality of life, Ruiz called for government agencies and civilian companies to start recruiting Marines long before they leave the service. Not 6 months out. Not 12 months out. He wants hiring pipelines to begin up to a year before separation. He even floated the idea of formal partnerships with Big Tech companies starting at enlistment, guaranteeing job placement for Marines who meet certain benchmarks.

The Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps is standing in front of Congress saying the current model leaves veterans vulnerable at a critical moment.

He's right.

I spent 25 years watching the military wait until service members were walking out the gate to think about what's next. TAP class at 12 months out. A binder full of pamphlets. A handshake. Good luck.

That's not a transition program. That's a checkbox.

The Gap That Kills Careers

The problem isn't that veterans lack skills. The problem is timing.

Most civilian hiring processes take 30 to 90 days from application to offer. Federal hiring can take 6 months or longer. Meanwhile, a Marine on terminal leave has maybe 30 days of cushion before the paycheck stops.

The math doesn't work.

If you start your job search at the 6-month mark (when TAP tells you to "get serious"), you're already behind. If you wait until you have your DD-214 in hand, you're in crisis mode.

Ruiz sees this. That's why he's pushing for earlier engagement from employers. Shipbuilding. Emergency services. Secret Service. Big Tech. He wants them recruiting Marines the same way colleges recruit high school athletes.

The Problem With Waiting for the System

Ruiz's vision is solid. But here's what he didn't say: there's no timeline, no budget, and no commitment from employers yet.

This isn't a program. It's a proposal.

Even if Congress acts, even if Big Tech signs on, even if the DoD builds these pipelines, it will take years. And it will only cover a fraction of transitioning service members.

You can't wait for the system to save you. You have to build your own pipeline.

The Zero Fluff Approach

While the Pentagon negotiates partnerships, you execute.

Start at 18 months out, not 6. Your transition doesn't begin when you file your paperwork. It begins the moment you decide you're getting out. That's when you start building your network, refining your resume, and identifying target companies.

Run your own recruiting operation. You don't need Amazon to partner with the Marine Corps. You need one person at Amazon to walk your resume to a hiring manager. That's the Warm Handoff. A cold application has a 2% success rate. An employee referral has a 40% success rate. Build those relationships now.

Treat job search like a campaign, not a lottery. The Career Kill Chain (Find, Fix, Track, Target, Engage, Assess) turns your transition from "spray and pray" into precision targeting. Stop uploading the same resume to 50 job boards and hoping something hits.

Use your 3-1-0 Method daily. 3 priorities. 1 objective that must get done. 0 excuses. When you're still in uniform, your #1 objective might be "Send 3 LinkedIn connection requests to people at target companies." Small daily actions compound into a pipeline.

The Bottom Line

The SMMC just validated what you already knew: the system isn't designed to help you land on your feet. It's designed to process you out.

Ruiz is fighting to change that at the institutional level. Respect.

But you don't have time to wait for institutions. You have a separation date. You have a family. You have bills.

Build your own pipeline. Start today.

Lock on. Execute. Win.
