By William "Jax" JacksonYou've discovered your Hallway Resonators. You've crafted authentic phrases that represent your professional identity. Now comes the critical step: testing them with your network.
This is where theory meets reality.
Your resonators might feel authentic to you, but do they land with the people who matter? Do they create the impression you intend?
Testing answers these questions:
Choose 5-10 people from different contexts:
Diversity matters. You want different perspectives.
Don't present them formally. Use them naturally:
In LinkedIn messages: "Hey, I've been thinking about how to describe my career transition. One thing I've realized is that I believe in translating complex problems into actionable solutions. Does that resonate with what you know about me?"
In conversations: Mention a resonator when it's relevant. "You know, I've been reflecting on my career, and I think what I'm really passionate about is building systems that scale—whether it's code or teams."
In emails: Include a resonator naturally in your message.
Ask specific questions:
Listen for patterns. If 3 out of 5 people don't understand a resonator, it needs refinement.
Update your resonators based on what you learned:
Mistake 1: Testing only with people who know you well
They'll be nice. You need honest feedback. Include people who don't know you yet.
Mistake 2: Presenting resonators as a formal pitch
"Here's my elevator pitch" kills authenticity. Use them naturally in conversation.
Mistake 3: Not asking for specific feedback
"What do you think?" is too vague. Ask specific questions.
Mistake 4: Testing with the wrong audience
Test with people in your target industry and role. Their feedback matters most.
Testing isn't one-time. It's ongoing:
Your brand should evolve as you grow.
After testing, you should notice:
Testing is the bridge between self-discovery and authentic communication. Don't skip it.
